There are no simple solutions to affect access and the cost of healthcare dramatically without fundamental changes in governmental policy. That being said, there are ways at the community level that can assist. It requires Collective Impact to address community health priorities measurably.
Collective Impact is a method in which organizations work together across sectors, and share information to solve a complex social ill. Collective Impact is not collaboration. Collaboration commonly fails to provide measurable outcomes in solving complex social issues. “Large-scale social change requires broad cross-sector coordination (Collective Impact),” whereas collaboration “remains focused on the isolated intervention of individual organizations.” (Kania, Kramer, & Kania, 2011)
The Collective Impact model provides a vehicle where for-profit, governmental, and non-profit organizations can provide transformational change within communities. For instance, community organizations could measurably address the rate of diabetes or obesity within their communities over a 3 to 5-year arc, resulting in a definitive outcome. This, of course, requires extensive strategic planning, funding, and coordination.
